Innovation, as driven by the creation of new knowledge in research and development, and its accelerated deployment into products and services on the market, is a key strategic goal of the R&D organisation. The evolving field of knowledge management provides both important strategic components and a diverse, growing toolkit of tactical measures, methodologies and technologies that can be integrated into the continuous improvement of the organisation’s performance and supporting systems, so as to gain sustainable competitive advantage.

Supporting systems for the scientific researcher such as electronic lab notebooks and collaborative eR&D systems are increasingly being used to replace paper-based systems in the recording and capture of laboratory information on research and experiments. These systems need to be designed to support the needs of the researcher in their day-to-day working processes, to support knowledge-sharing between researchers and between research groups and other functions in the organisation, in addition to meeting regulatory, intellectual property and legal requirements. Electronic records in these systems must satisfy legal record retention, usability and authenticity requirements. Experimental records including documents, diverse scientific data types, analyses, annotations, and reports, plus metadata that relate authorship, date stamps, digital signatures, and other information, can be captured in systems, which need to support current and future integration, querying and mining of the data.

New knowledge-based technologies in natural language processing, search, classification, ontologies and the semantic web are additionally providing new tools for the enhancement of the productivity of the researcher and in the enabling of the asking and more timely answering of powerful questions.

User adoption of new systems, cultural issues, organisational learning, communities of practice and collaboration are also all key areas requiring attention to maximise value extraction and return on research investment. Knowledge transfer and flow between different research groups within the organisation and with an increasing number of partners needs to be enhanced by knowledge process management. Finally the transfer of knowledge to and from other parts of the business (clinical, marketing etc.) and across the complete product life cycle provides many challenges to which best knowledge management practices may contribute.

Issues addressed by this program are as follows:

• Knowledge Management as a strategy for R&D and innovation processes

• Knowledge transfer and flow within and without R&D

• Personal Knowledge Management and Productivity of the Scientific Researcher

• Role of Collaborative R&D and Communities of Practice in Life Science Research

• Conducting a Knowledge Audit of your R&D organisation and integrating findings into your research processes and systems

• Transfer of Knowledge to and from R&D and other Organisational Functions (clinical, marketing etc.)

• Effective Classification and Indexing of Laboratory Knowledge

• Enabling the Asking and Answering of Scientific Questions

• Applying Advanced Search Techniques, Natural Language Processing, Agents to Secondary Research and the processing and access to new knowledge

• Applying Knowledge Management Mapping and Metrics to R&D

• Challenges, benefits and investment analysis from Case studies

• Managing the transition to mixed paper-electronic and electronic-only approaches

• Best practice and Standard Operating Procedures for electronic record-keeping

• Integration of laboratory data into the global knowledge environment

• Pros and cons of centralisation and localisation

• Creativity and intuition, how do we best support novel ideas and innovating?

• How do we make collaborative virtual work environments for R&D work?

• Usability and retrieval of electronic data

• Embedding knowledge into working processes and workflows

• Enabling the understanding of knowledge for groups distributed in space, time and expertise domain

• Data-sharing and analysis between remote team members

• Management of multi-site, multi-organizational collaborative projects including data management in contract and outsourced R&D projects

• FDA compliance in electronic R&D systems, 21CFR-11

• Planning for future trends in the regulatory environment

• International similarities and differences regarding keeping, managing, and submitting electronic records for IP/patents, drug approvals for FDA and equivalents

• Legal guidelines, practical experiences, law/legal case studies relating to use/acceptance (or not) of electronic records and submissions

• Reports on rates of adoption of electronic record-keeping and submissions by industry, regulatory body, and country, and other details on accepted practices, and review of audits/validation
