| About John Conway (Accelrys) |
|
After graduating from Pennsylvania State Univeristy with a B.S. in Biochemistry, John Conway worked as an Analytical Biochemist at Tektagen Inc. The next step for John was with the Pennsylvania State Police as a Forensic Scientist. After years with the State Police John went back to industry for a small startup called SolarCare Technologies, now Orasure Inc. developing drugs of abuse and other diagnostic assays. In those times informatics was a do it yourself practice and allowed programmimg and computer savy scientists to excel in the laboratory. John then cofounded Avecon Inc., a company specializing in the Veterinary, Clinical and Agricultural Diagnostic market. The company was later sold to his partner and he joined Merck and Co. Inc. as a Staff Biochemist. It is at Merck where John's career in informatics and information technology blossomed. After spending years in basic research as a Biological Data Specialist, John moved to the Molecular Systems group supporting the Modellers and Computational Chemists. After realizing that he was better in the informatics arena, he returned to the Cheminformatics group where he held a senior role. It was here that John became intrigued by data and workflow technologies. The power and enablement that Pipeline Pilot brought to the average scientist was very apparent. He simultaneously was taking classes for an M.S. in Molecular Biology. This accumulated diverse experience that included project management, product management and global responsibilities prepared John well for his next role as Director and Site Head of Cheminformatics for GSK at its Philadelphia site. In this role, John also was Chair of the Biological Reagents (Structural Biology) Domain where he was responsible for creating the domain's vision and the strategy. When John left GSK he started in his current role as Director of Platform and Informatics and Principal Consultant. In this role, John oversees all of North American technical staff and has with his team and colleagues established some exciting new paths and strategies at Accelrys: 1) Enterprise Biological Registration and 2) Virtual workspaces through several portal technologies and of course Enterprise Knowledge Management.
